Assignment #3: CinemagraphsCinemagraphs — a still photograph that contains an element of movement lopped seamlessly to create a never ending moment.
The basics of creating a cinemagraph are quite simple. The entire process is built around creating a loop, duplicating a still layer, and covering up everything but the motion. Tip: Find a subject the will have a continuous loop. Therefore, the end needs to be the same as the beginning - seamlessly looping. |
These tutorials will show you how to make your very own animated GIF cinemagraphs in After Effects and Photoshop.

For those most comfortable with photography, Photoshop is a great option for putting together your cinemagraph.

If you’re more of a video editor than photography editor, After Effects will be your better option and will offer you a little more control.

Instructions:
1. View the How To Make a Cinemagraph in Photoshop OR After Effects Video (shown above).
2. PRELIMINARY WORK ( Sketchbook) a) Brainstorm ideas (1 page - point form) scenes with movement: - list 4-6 scenes/situations that you see on a daily basis (i.e. people walking) - within the scene there must be a Cyclical Motion- list simple isolated cyclical motions that could occur within the above scenes (i.e. moving footage and still image) b) Draw TWO thumbnails sketches: - Draw ONE thumbnail to show your overall scene. Use Rule of thirds to place your Emphasis (Cyclical movement). - Draw ONE thumbnail to show the Cyclical movement. 3. FILMING: Use your phone or camera to take an appropriate Cinemagraph video. You will need a subject matter, proper equipment (i.e. camera, tripod, lighting). Footage time approx. 60 secs. This video should include TWO key components:
4. EDITING: Use Photoshop or After Effects to download and edit your video. Follow the tutorials above to assistance you with the editing. Your CINEMAGRAPHY video must be 30-40secs long. HOW to EXPORT a .GIF file in Photoshop: - File EXPORT - Save for Web - Image Size: 1920 px 1080 px -Looping Option: Forever -Save to your Desktop 5. ARTIST STATEMENT ABOUT CINEMAGRAPH (in your sketchbook or typed)

(i.e. inspiration) b) Describe the artwork? Cinemagraph Analysis of Peer's work (handout will be provided). |
Due Dates:
1. Preliminary Work - Complete by Fri. Oct. 27
2. FINAL DUE DATE: Submit to Office365>OneDrive by NOV. 6 by the end of the period. Create a folder with your name
3. Artist Statement and Cinemagraph Analysis - submit in sketchbook or online with RUBRIC on Nov. 8 by the end of the period. NOTE: ***If filming faces you must secure written permission of subjects before you film. |
